response

You have some good points about how power has corrupted Macbeth. I like how you showed what he was like at the start adn then you have begun to show what he has changed into. You may want to explain after each point how this is an example of his quest for power corrupting him and changing him. See pink sheet in class for more details. Overall good understanding of Eq.

How does power corrupt?

In the beginning of the play of Macbeth, Macbeth hears a prophecy that he is going to become king. But he realizes that his friend who is the king at the time is standing in the way of making the prophecy come true. He tells this to Lady Macbeth and she convinces him that the only way he will become king is to murder King Duncan. Macbeth was once a well mannered man who led the armed force to victory, but because of these prophecies, his life and reputation was ruined. He murdered King Duncan and after that, any blood shed after that did not affect him. In act 3, Macbeth heard another prophecy that Banquo is a major threat to his power because he suspects he murdered King Duncan for the throne. He does not want to take that chance of loosing his power, even if it means taking his friends life. Macbeth then took care of Banquo by sending two murderers out to murder Banquo and his son Fleance. Banquo ended up murdered but Fleance escaped. At the Feast, Macbeth finally feels guilty for murdering King Duncan and Banquo and hallucinates and sees Banquos ghost. Ever since that night he finally feels guilty and starts realizing what he has become. Therefore, Macbeth having power and wanting to keep it corrupted him and it ended with a loss friend.

Comments

Thanks for keeping your blog up to date! I also enjoy how you respond to the comments. It does help with your work-it is improving. I am seeing growth in your learning.

I am glad that you enjoyed the presentations and that you took a unique and creative approach to your presentation as well. You are making good connections to Macbeth and the questions.

Now do you think he is a tragic hero or not??????

tragic hero!!!

1. Please explain why you chose the method of presentation that you did?
We chose the method of a slow motion slideshow because it is a unique method of presenting an act and we also acted it out the old fashion way so our peers could compare and contrast the different methods of presenting.
2.What were your influences for this presentation?
Our influences was the simplified video of Macbeth that ashley found which was also a slow motion slideshow but they had a series of photos and we only had a few
3. Was this presentation any different then past presentations? Please explain.
This presentation was different because it was different in a way that most people did slideshows or a video rather than the old fashion way of acting instead.
4. Was this presentation any more challenging or was it easier than past presentations? Please explain.
I think that this presentation was easier because it was more enjoyable rather than dreading an act infront of the class and you could always redue something if u mess up so its much easier to do a video.
5. Do you find yourself writing more on your private blog or on the class blog? Please explain.
I find myself writing in my own blog rather than the class blog because I feel more comfortable having my own eyes and the teachers eyes see my work but i dont really mind it if i write on the class blog because i get to see what my peers views are of the play which is interesting.

presentation day!!!!! =)

Yesterday was presentation day and presentations varied from the old fashion acting to the modern technology of a video. I really think that they were all well done and the videos especially were fascinating in different ways, from humor to getting the point through to the audience. Overall I was very impressed at my peers work for this project and I look forward to projects like these in the future. =)

mondays class---

On monday, it was our last class before we presented our projects. In class we had to present what our act was about. For example, why was our act significant to the play and our act is significant because it is the second murder in the play and at this time people were now suspicious of Macbeth killing King Duncan and Macbeth starts to loose it. There were other questions that we answered in our presentation like what supports our act, or who were the main characters and how it connected to the other acts.

lab day!

Today in English class we were working in the lab. What my group did was find music for our presentations that were dramatic and creepy to set the tone to our presentation. Krista also typed up our script and we went over it which was really cool.

How do you see your act connecting to at least two EQ with examples from the passage.

How does power corrupt?
In the beginning of the play, Macbeth hears a prophecy that states that he is going to be the king, but Banquo is in the way of that prophecy. What Macbeth does is he orders 2 murderers to kill Banquo which is what happens in our Act, Act 3. In Act 3, after the murderers kill Banquo, Macbeth becomes king. And during the feast, Macbeth hallucinates and sees Banquo when he was already dead. From all the power that Macbeth gained and how he got there also connects to the other essential question: How far is one willing to “go” to get what they desire most? Because Macbeth went so far to get what he wanted, all that power that he gained is corrupting the way he thinks by hallucination and so he was very close at that moment to ruining his power therefore power does indeed corrupt.

Out of 20...

Out of 20 I would give myself a 20 because I had put a lot of effort into these entries and it would be a shame to not get credit on something that I tried really hard in.

Macbeth group project

For our group, which is Act 3 in Macbeth, we are going to pursue making a video to show the class, in our own interpretation. I am going to be the role of Macbeth and Fleance, Brianne is going to be Banquo, Krista is going to be Lady Macbeth and a murderer, and Ashley is the murderer of Banquo. Our group understands our act because we know what happens to Banquo and why and we are going to try to interpret this in a modern form. Banquo was killed because he suspected Macbeth killed the king, therefore he was a major threat to Macbeth. Macbeth wanted him killed so he hired two killers to murder him, and pursued them to think that Banquo was a big threat to the king. After Banquo is killed, at the feast Macbeth starts to hallucinate by seeing Banquo's ghost, because of all the guilty things he has accomplished. He ends up having a melt down in front of all his guests and Lady Macbeth dismisses them.

How does power corrupt?

Eng 11

Please select an essential question and answer it in response to what you have seen in the movie. Bring in evidence (examples) to support what you are saying as you answer your question. Please post your answer on your personal blog. Due Wed. Nov. 4

Essential question: how does power corrupt?
How does power corrupt? In Macbeth, Macbeth meets with three witches who tell him a prophecy of him becoming king. When he hears that he will get all this power, he then murders Duncan (the previous king) and therefore he is next on the throne so he is now king. So Macbeth becomes king but how he got there was inhumane. He murdered another person to get what he desired the most, power. This shows how power can corrupt because people would actually kill to have power just like Macbeth.

Postcard

Homework: Due Thursday Oct 29, 09 write a “postcard” on your personal blog about what you are learning. Here are some sentence starters to help you get started: Dear,

Dear Brianne,
In class we have been learning about Macbeth and the curse of macbeth. We also have been learning about humanity, integrity and power and how it connects to the story.

Does nature or nurture determine a person’s destiny?

Does nature or nurture determine a person’s destiny?

Come, thick night,
And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell,
That my keen knife see not the wound it makes,
Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark,

The reason why i decided to choose this passage is because it caught my eye when Shakespeare used such powerful metaphors to emphasize the meaning of this passage. What really caught my eye was when he says: Nor heaven peep through the blanket of the dark. This caught my eye because in the medieval times God or religion was such an important part of those times and to do something that evil and using heaven as a reference is fairly risky. To me this part of the passage means that there are evil people in the world who really do kill to get what they desire most and they don't regret it because its what they want and nothing can stop them now because they killed them. I think that this is important because it shows that some people are mental and think that the only way to get their way is to get rid of the person to get what they want. This part is relevant to the play because it shows how evil and inhumane people could be to get what they desire most.

Characteristics of lady Macbeth

1) The differences you saw between the movie and reading scenes 1,2,3 Was it easier and why? Was it more challenging and why?

The differences were that reading the book was much easier to process into my brain because if I didn’t understand something I could easily re read it but if it was a movie it would just simply pass rather than explaining the scene. Although I miss some parts of the movie because it wasn’t very clear I still prefer it because I still understand the general idea of the story and its much easier to watch and listen.

How far are you willing to go to get what you desire most?

The farthest I would go would depend on the situation. For example, if it was a job that I've been dreaming to get all my life but there's someone better than me. I would not literally 'kill' for the job. Instead I would work extra hard to beat the other person to the job. Although if I do not get the job its not the end of the world for me. I would know that I worked extremely hard to get it and there are other opportunities out there.

HI :)

Well I do believe that the ritual is you have to leave the theater and spin around three times and spit. I think people believe in rituals because of all the stories that they have heard, such as this curse. But I believe that these such curses don't actually exist. It is our imagination that tricks us to do strange things which makes you think that its the curse but really its just you. So from this, people around you may think that you've actually been curse which also affects them. I think that we are superstitious because we want to believe in something, or even scare others. The best part is people believe in it and from that it grows and grows, and from that, superstition and rituals.

HI

I see you have heard about the curse. Now you talk about a ritual. Do you know what it is? Why do you think people believe in rituals or that we are superstitious?

Macbeth. All i really know about macbeth is that it is a cursed play and anyone who is in the play is in harm of either getting injured or killed. But there is a way to uncurse your self. According to the program that i watched u had to be outside the theatre and do a ritual and then maybe your safe.
Shakespeare is one of the most famous play writers. His vocabulary is complex and intriguing with old english. The plays that i have read are othello and romeo and juliet which were very emotional with love and loss. Although i do not know much about shakespeare, but i do know that is he an amazing writer, its a shame that he does not live in our time.

In class on Thursday we each had presentations on a category. The different topics that were presented were loyalty, power, self worth, ambition, humanity and integrity. We then had to write definitions and connect them to the short stories we read. The short story that I read was "The most dangerous game". In the story, although General Zaroff was loyal and true to his word, he had no humanity. He was a barbaric human being who only believed in pleasing himself with his hunting of men. In this class I learned about all these topics but I believe that the topic that connected well with the short story was power because General Zaroff had much power with his hunting and abused it by hunting men. To me, what stood out in class that day were the videos that some groups showed and it would be cool to watch more clips like that because they were interesting and I really believe I learn well from them.

Today in class we decided to make our own Gmail account. But due to unfortunate technical difficulties my Gmail account would not be created. So instead I created this blog named Stephanie Wong is much cooler than Brianne Fung on blogger.com.
